For those of us who live with Vizslas there is some question as to whether, “we own the Vizslas or the Vizslas own us”. If you decide to purchase a Vizsla you must understand that it will expect to be a member of the family. They are highly intelligent, emotionally giving, great hunting dogs, and wonderful family pets. However, all of these outstanding qualities come with a price that you should be aware of before you bring your new Vizsla home.
Vizslas are a high energy breed. If you want to be happy with your dog, you must understand that they need regular exercise and training. "A tired Vizsla is a good Vizsla”. Exercise burns off excess energy and basic obedience training gives them a job to do. Obedience training, Agility training or field work gives the highly intelligent Vizsla something on which to focus their brain.
While Vizslas are a sporting dog, they can not live outdoors. They are sensitive to cold weather and would not thrive if cut off from their family. Vizslas are people dogs. They love children and other animals, especially other Vizslas. They become very devoted to their families and generally follow you from room to room just to be close to their people.
A Vizsla is an investment. If you decide that this is the breed for
you then please make sure that you do not consider buying from a pet store or someone who is turning out many puppies each year. There are many reputable breeders willing to refer you to someone with healthy well bred puppies. Cost should not be your first concern when choosing a puppy. What you save now, you will pay for later in vet bills and emotional pain if a puppy bred in a puppy mill later develops health or temperment issues.
As breeders we strive to make our breed the best that it can be!
